- medication needs to be continued for the effect to be maintained
- hard to access the effectiveness as unknown what happened if they did not take the medication

A
- electroconvulsive therapy
- short electrical stimulus to the brain through tiny electrodes in the temples
- causes epileptic like seizures in the patient
- patient is under anesthetic, receive 6-12 ECT sessions for one whole treatment, one per day 2-3 times a week
- used when drug treatment fails

- cognitive behavioural therapy
- restructuring negative thinking to make positive changing
- setting realistic goals and taking responsibility for actions and thoughts
- changing thought and perception = changes in behaviour and response, positive outlook

- cognitive behaviour group therapy
- uses group dynamics as well as therapy techniques
- people feel more compelled to engage in a group discussion than when they are alone, meet others in the same situation or who have recovered, hope

- adapted to suit the needs of the individual/group
- broader theoretical base, more sophisticated approach
- greater flexibility

- maladaptive cognition could be a consequence of the mental illness not the cause
- some people may struggle expressing themselves verbally
- could be other factors
