Consent is not the same as informed consent
As a model & to acknowledge respect and regard, all MFT’s are encouraged to provide each client, at right time, and within context of therapeutic relatoinship, an accurate and informative statement of the Therapist’s experience, education, specialties, and professional orientation, and any other information deemed appropriate by the licensee.
Required before beginning treatment per California B&p Code
- Fee or basis of computation
- Status as unlicensed trainee or intern AND the supervision of a licensed MFT
- Fictitious business name - no misleading/deceptive. If corporation - must use either “marriage,” “family,” “therapy” or “child” with one or more the words “counseling,” “therapy,” “therapist,” and the word “corporation” or abbreviation
- Conspicuously displayed professional license

Standards of care DEFINITION
For general practitioners -that level of skill,
knowledge, and care in diagnosis and treatment
ordinarily possessed and exercised by other reasonably careful and prudent therapists in the same or similar
circumstances at the time in question.
SPECIALIST Standards of Care
Specialists are held to the standard of skill, knowledge and
care ordinarily possessed and exercised by other reasonably careful and prudent specialists in the same or similar circumstances at the time in question.

If you are contacted by the BBS for an investigation of a charge or citation:
What you will need to prove is that your clinical actions and choices in treatment and diagnosis reflect your knowledge and adherence to the standards of care and standards of practice for an MFT or LPCC.
