Treatment Info Flashcards
Complications of unconsciousness
Behavioural and emotional problems - complicated by coming to terms with their current physical condition and capabilities
Treatment strategies for neglect
Stand on side they are neglecting and do treatments from this side to promote use of this side
Voluntary limb activation out of sight and mirror box therapy has been proved to be beneficial
Radial nerve palsy
Regeneration occurs at a rate of 1mm per day
Stretches shouldn’t be used until indicated by the surgeon as you don’t want to ruin the surgical repair
Guillain-Barré syndrome
Can cause fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate which need to be careful when rehab
Need to take fatigue into account when doing rehab
Parkinson’s disease
Cuing - patients struggle with initiating movement automatically and struggle with the timing of sequential movements as the supplementary motor area and basal ganglia are hypoactive
Cues should be chosen that are appropriate for the patient and the movement involved
Breaking down complex movements will also help and arranging things in a sequential order
Falls prevention specifically for PD
Make standing tasks safer or prepare patients to manage them better
Ask specifically about what activities cause falls
Environmental adaptations
Cognitive strategies to manage balance
Optimise motor skills
