Treatment Flashcards
Key difference between treating articulation and phonological disorders
- Artic: each sound is targeted individually and trains the motor skill
-Phonological: Treats groups or classes of sounds and trains the representations of sounds
Why is it challenging to keep articulation and phonological approaches separate?
Define minimal opposition approach
use of pairs of words that differ by only one phoneme
How are minimal pairs used in minimal opposition contrast therapy?
Used to teach sound contrasts
How do you select targets for minimal pair therapy?
Sounds should share as many articulatory features as possible
The minimal pair should only differ in only one feature (if possible)
Ex: Tea and key (only differ in the place for the /t/ and /k/ sound throughout both words
Define maximal oppositions approach
Teaching features not sounds
Hoping to rapidly teach a variety of sounds contrasts = rapid change observed
Distinguish between minimal oppositions approach from maximal opposition
When would you use the maximal opposition approach and how do you pick the targets?
Describe the cycles approach
How does the concept of cycles help in treating phonological processes?
Children that are highly unintelligible and are treated in a cycle.
Cycle might include stopping, gliding, cluster reduction, (multiple processes) and going back in that same order all over again
Not working on mastery and can take weeks to complete
One session per process
Re-test and if any process still has 40%, cycle through again until they hit below 40%
What are primary patterns?
Why are primary patterns targeted first in the cycles approach?
What is the core vocabulary approach?
- Goal is to stabalize productions of specific words that are function for the child
Why is selecting functionally relevant words critical in the core vocab approach?
Helps to reduce communication breakdowns and
How does multiple oppositions therapy differ from minimal oppositions?
It is used for clients who use a certain phoneme for multiple other phonemes in error.
