What is cognitive behaviour therapy?
A
- CBT involves working to change negative and irrational thoughts. It does this by identifying the negative triad and then challenging the thoughts
- The therapist may also set homework to help prove the negative triad wrong

- Extend the ANC model to ABCDE D-dispute and E-effect
- here the therapist challenges irrational thoughts through vigorous arguments

What is a limitation of CBT?

- High relapse rates Ali et al assessed depression in 439 clients every month following CBT. 42% relapsed withing 6 months and 53% within the year

What evidence supports CBT?
A
- March compared CBT to antidepressants. After 36 weeks 81% of CBT group and 81% of the antidepressant group were significantly improved

What is a limitation of CBT regarding applicability?
A
- May not be suitable for mentally disabled clients as requires rational cognitive thought or severely depressed clients who cannot motivate themselves to engage with CBT
