- The dog is completely overjoyed to see a group of humans - as from past experience are fun to be around.
- It is completely unaware of the morbid situation it has encountered, and expects to receive attention and to be played with: the irony is rather terrifying.
- Furthermore, the fact that it licked the prisoners face out of anyone obviously highlights Orwell’s beliefs that no matter the actions of a human, everyone is equal

- the harsh reality of the soul-crushing situation is evident: the man is minutes away from loosing his life - his actions now completely irrelevant to his outcome - yet he retains his dignity enough to step around a puddle like anyone else would.
