Trauma Flashcards
Where do most eye injuries occur?
At work and home
Which stain can be used to make damaged parts of the eye epithelium easier to see?
Fluorescein
-to identify areas of epithelial loss
-disclosing agent combined with anaesthetic
e.g. corneal abrasion
(the abraded area will stain bright green when viewed with a blue light)
Triad of anterior uveitis
Redness
Pain
Photophobia
Hyphaemia
Blood in the anterior chamber of the eye
What usually accompanies optic nerve avulsion?
Vitreous haemorrhage
Signs and symptoms of optic nerve damage e.g. following blunt trauma
Signs Decreased Vision Decreased color vision (Dyschromatopsia) Afferent pupillary defect Visual field deficits
Symptoms
Blurry vision
Scotomas
Decreased color sensation
Often leads to double vision and the appearance of a sunken orbit
It is often associated with infra orbital parasthesia
Orbital floor fracture
What does a hyphaema indicate?
Indicates that the eye has suffered a significant injury with damage to the intraocular structures
The eys is usually acutely painful especially if the intraocular pressure is elevated
How do you treat corneal abrasions?
With antibiotic ointment and firm padding
Foreign material under the eye lid
This is called a sub tarsal foreign body
Corneal foreign bodies
CFB
-removed with a small cotton tip or a sharp needle (under topical anaesthetic)
Are acid or alkali burns worse for the eye?
Alkali burns are worse as they denture the proteins
Potential intra-ocular foreign body? (IOFB)
X-ray this!!
