Longitudinal waves

A

In longitudinal waves, the vibrations are in the same direction as the energy transfer.
An example would be a sound wave

Q

Investigating waves practical

A

1) attach a signal generator to the ripple tank dipper
2) turn on the generator to create waves
3)find the frequency of waves by counting the number of ripples that pass a point in 10 seconds and divide that by 10
4)use a lamp to create shadows of the ripples on a screen below the tank. Place a metre ruler beside the shadows
5) The distance between each shadow is equal to one wavelength
6)measure the wavelength by measuringthe distance across 10 gaps between the shadow lines and divide this by 10
7)use frequency X wavelength to calculate the speed
8)this is suitable as it allows you to measure the wavelength without disturbing the waves
