Transverse and Longitudinal Flashcards
Waves are a transfer of…
A) Energy
B) Matter
Energy
What is the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves?
transverse: oscillations are PERPENDICULAR to the direction of energy transfer
longitudinal: oscillations are PARALLEL to the direction of energy transfer
what is the wavelength?
The distance between two matching points on neighbouring waves (doesn’t have a unit of measurement)
What is the amplitude?
The maximum distance a point moves from the equilibrium (the more amplitude, the more energy it’s carrying)
what is the frequency?
The number of waves passing a point in one second (measured in Hz)
The period (t) is…
The time taken for one wave to pass a point
Which equation links period (t) and frequency (f)?
T=1/f
What equation is used to figure out the wave speed?
wave speed (m/s)= wavelength (m) x frequency (Hz)
