Recognize overloads and Poorly balanced weight
Knowing your cargo is properly secured and does not obscure Your view
Knowing your cargo does not restrict your access to emergency equipment
If you are carrying hazardous material that requires placards, you will also need to have a hazardous material endorsement.
When should you inspect cargo?
As part of the vehicle inspection
Within 50 miles of starting your trip
After three hours 150 miles
After every break
GVW
Gross vehicle weight (GVW)
Total weight of a single vehicle plus its load.
GCW
Gross combination weight (GCW)
Total weight of a powered unit plus trailer(s) plus the cargo.
GCWR
Gross combination weight rating (GCWR)
Maximum GCW specified by the manufacturer for a specific combination of vehicles plus its load.
GVWR
Maximum GVW specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle.
Displayed on the federal motor vehicle safety standard (FMVSS) certification label
Axle weight
Weight transmitted to the ground by one axle or one set of axles.
Tire load
Maximum safe weight a tire can carry at a specified pressure.
