Transportation: Science Flashcards
Why do people need transportation?
People need transportation because it helps get people and goods to other places with ease.
How do different forms of transportation meet people’s transportation needs?
Each form of transportation provides a unique set of advantages and disadvantages. Bicycles are good for short distance travel, while cars are good for long distance travel.
What factors influence a community’s choice of a transportation system?
Communities continue to build and repair roads and highways. The Light rail is one of today’s most efficient travel systems because it can transport people quicker,
efficiently, and without the use of petroleum- base fuels.
What forces affect the motion of transportation vehicles?
On Earth, all vehicles are affected by four forces that each point in a different direction: up, down, forward, and backward. Engines provide the forward thrust, friction provides the backward force, the weight provides the downwards force, and the upward force comes from air loft.
System of highways
Advantage: people travel among communities & regions with ease
Disadvantage: Rush hour traffic - causes delays.
Air transportation
Advantage: Travel the world with ease and efficiency.
Disadvantage: Heightened security at airports - causes delays.
Fuel
Advantage: readily available, relative low in cost
Disadvantage: nonrenewable, extremely dependent, causes pollution.
Alternative options
Advantage: Hybrid vehicles (electricity & gasoline)
Disadvantage: Light rail systems in big cities.
