Transportation in and Out of cells Flashcards
Define diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration. This is done until Equilibrium is reached (High - Low)
Define Facilitated Diffusion
Facilitated diffusion is diffusion aided with an integral protein. this is still from high concentration to low concentration.
Define Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of WATER from high concentration to low concentration. this is through a semi-permeable membrane. This is done until equilibrium is reached.
What is Equilibrium
Equilibrium is simply being equal on both sides
What is Passive transport?
passive transport is molecules moving randomly from high concentration to low concentration without needing to use energy.
Does passive transport go with or against the Concentration gradient?
With
What are different types of passive transport?
Diffusion, Facilitated diffusion, Osmosis
What is Active transport?
passive transport is molecules moving to where they are needed by using energy to move. They move from Low to high concentration.
Does Active transport go with or against the Concentration gradient?
Against
What are different types of Active transport?
Protein Pumps, Endocytosis, exocytosis
How does a Protein Pump Work?
the Protein changes shape (By using ATP which is energy) to move molecules of Sodium and Potassium
What are some examples of active transport within the organs
uptake of glucose in our intestines - the removal or urea in our kidney’s
What type of substance does diffusion move?
DIssolved substances
What type of substance does facilitated diffusion move?
various substances
What type of substance does osmosis move?
water
