How does a sail work?
Boats could be powered by wind rather than oars, sticks or paddles.
What are junks?
They are ancient sailing boats, they were first invented for military combat and trade.
Give more details on the junk.
They travelled long distances on rivers an across the sea. They were improved over time and became the most successful ship.
What are dhows?
They are traditional Arabs sailing boats. Today traders still use dhows to sail along the Eat African coast.
What did the Portuguese develop?
In the late 1400’s they developed a small light sailing ship called the caravel. It was better than older ships because it was fast and could sail into the wind.
What was the famous British clipper?
The Cutty Sark that carried tea for trading.
Describe the Clipper.
Clippers were small ships, used to carry passengers or tea and silk. They were popular with pirates for their size and speed.
What is a tall ship?
Is a large sailing ship wit tall masts. It became popular in the mid 1900’s. Sailing ships were used for international trade and naval warfare.
Who were the Wright brothers?
They were American brothers Wilbur and Orville. They invented, designed, made and flew the first powered and piloted aero plane.
What was the first aeroplane called. Describe it.
The flyer. It was a fabric covered biplane with a wooden frame. It weighed 700 pounds and had 2 propellers.
Where and when we’re the first sails invented?
In Eygpt about 5000 years ago.
