Transport of Water Through a Plant Flashcards
1
Q
What is root pressure?
A
Water moves into xylem in roots, hydrostatic pressure increases.
Water forced up xylem by hydrostatic pressure.
2
Q
What is the transpiration pull?
A
Water molecules held together by cohesion.
Creates long continuous column of water.
As water evaporates put stomata it creates tension.
Tension pulls column up the plant.
Called Cohesion-Tension theory.
3
Q
What is capillary action?
A
Water molecules H bond with polar lignin molecules.
Forces of attraction can help pull water ul sides of vessel.
