transport of materials Flashcards
osmotic equalibrium
concentrations inside and out of the cell are the same
plasma membrane
selectively permeable membrane that allows solutes and waste to move in and out of the cell
passive transport
How can it be increased
movement of materials when no energy is used -increased by high conc gradient, small molecule size, higher temperatures
diffusion
movement from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
osmosis
movement of WATER across a semi permeable membrane
facilitated diffusion
movement of larger molecules/ions through a protein channels or carrier proteins embedded in plasma membrane
active transport
requires energy (ATP) to move materials in and out of cell
pinocytosis
uptake of liquids by wrapping membrane around droplet
phagocytosis
uptake of solid particles by engulfing by cells
ion pumps/ carrier proteins
energy is used to change shape of carrier protein channel to pump ions against concentration gradients
passive vs active transport
passive: no ATP required, transport WITH conc gradient
active: needs ATP, AGAINST con gradient
