Transport in Plants Flashcards
What are the two types of xylem vessel?
Xylem and Phloem Vessels
Why do roots have root hair cells?
They give the plant a large surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil.
By what method are mineral ions absorbed into root hair cells and why?
Mineral ions are absorbed by active transport because the concentration of mineral ions is usually higher in the root hair cells than in the soil around them.
By what method is water absorbed into the root hair cells?
Osmosis
What are phloem tubes made of?
Columns of elongated living cells.
What do phloem cells have in their end walls?
Small pores to allow things to flow through.
What do phloem tubes transport and what is it for?
Food Substances (Mainly Sucrose) made in the leaves to the rest of plant for immediate use (e.g. in growing regions) or for storage.
What is the process of phloem tubes transporting food called and what does this process require?
Translocation which requires energy from respiration.
In what direction does transport go in phloem tubes?
Up and down
What do xylem tubes transport?
Water and Mineral ions
Where do xylem tubes transport substances from and to?
From the roots to the stem and leaves.
What is the movement of water from the roots, through the xylem and out of the leaves called?
The Transpiration Stream
