Transport in Plants Flashcards
1
Q
Root hairs
A
Take in minerals and water. Millions of these root hairs give the plant a large surface area for absorbing mineral ions and water from the soil.
2
Q
Phloem
A
Transports food (mainly sucrose)
3
Q
Xylem
A
Take water up from roots to the stem and leaves. This movement is called the transpiration stream.
4
Q
Transpiration
A
Water is lost from a plants leaves through evaporation and diffusion. This creates a shortage of water on the leaves so more water is drawn up the xylem vessels to replace it. TMT there’s more water drawn from the roots and there’s a constant transpiration stream through the plant.
