Transport In Plants Flashcards
What is the meristem?
A layer of dividing cells, here it is called the pericycle
Where are meristem cells found?
In the cambium which divide to produce new xylem and phloem cells
What four things do cells regularly need?
Oxygen
Water
Minerals
Nutrients
Why do plants need a transport system?
To move water and minerals from the roots up to the leaves
To move sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant
Where is the vascular bundle found?
In the centre of a young root
What shape does xylem usually take?
An X shape or star shape
What is the special sheath of cells that surround the vascular bundle called?
The endodermis
What two types of tissue can b found in plants? And what is their purpose?
Collenchyma and sclerenchyma they are used to strengthen
What is cambium?
A layer of meristem cells that divide to produce new xylem and phloem
What is a dicotyledonous leaf?
A leaf which has a branching network of veins that get smaller as they spread away from the midrib
What must happen in the process of dissecting a plant?
Staining
Define dicotyledonous plants.
Plants with two seed leaves and a branching pattern of veins in the leaf.
What is meristem?
A layer of dividing cells, here it is called the pericycle
What is the phloem?
Transports dissolved assimilates
What does vascular tissue consist of?
consists of cells specialised for transporting fluids by mass flow.
