transport in man Flashcards
why do multi cellular organisms have a transport system?
-ensure that their cells are provided with the resources they require for carrying out life processes and also help to ensure that wastes produced by the cells are produced.
a transport system is needed to quickly ___.
- supply the trillion of cells with glucose and oxygen
- remove waste products
- transport molecules like hormones to coordinate the function of the various organs
what does the pulmonary circulation link?
the heart to the lungs
what is the other circulation called
systemic circulation
describe pulmonary circulation
deoxygenated blood rich in carbon dioxide is transport to the lungs for gaseous exchange
the blood, after it has been oxygenated in the lungs is then transported back into the heart
describe systemic circulation
when your heart pumps, oxygenated blood that has returned from the lungs will be sent to all parts of the body, transporting oxygen to the cells that need it for respiration.
carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of respiration, diffuses into the blood stream and is carried in the blood which returns to the heart.
why is a double circulation advantageous?
- blood entering the lungs is at a slower pressure compared to blood leaving the heart to all parts of the body. blood flows more slowly through the lungs, allowing more time for blood to be well oxygenated before returning to the heart
- the heart pumps oxygenated blood at high pressure to the rest of the body, so oxygenated blood is distributed to the body tissues more quickly. this helps maintain the high metabolic rate in mammals.
