Q

Why can simple, unicellular organism rely on diffusion for the movement of substances in and out of the cell?

A

They can rely on diffusion to get the substances which they need because their surface area to volume ratio is large which is optimal for diffusion.

Q

Why is there a need for a transport system in multicellular organisms?

A

They need a transport system because they have a small surface area to volume ratio which is not optimal for diffusion which means that they cannot get all of the substances which they need through diffusion alone.

Q

How is water absorbed by root hair cells?

A

It is absorbed by root hair cells through osmosis.

They go from an area of high water concentration to low through a semi permeable membrane.

Root hair cells have a large surface area to increase the rate of absorption.

Q

How is the rate of transpiration affected by humidity?

A

AS the humidity in the air increases, the transpiration rate decreases.

This is because osmosis works better when water is going from a place of higher concentration to lower concentration therefore when the air is humid and has more water osmosis will not happen as much.

Q

How is the rate of transpiration affected by wind speed?

A

The faster the wind speed is, the greater the transpiration rate will be.

This is because when there is more wind then saturated air around the plant will be replaced by dry air which means more osmosis can take place.

Q

How is the rate of transpiration affected by temperature?

A

As the temperature increases, the rate of transpiration will also increase.

This is because the rate of evaporation increases when the particles have more energy gained by the increase in temperature.
