Transport in cells Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration.
Where does diffusion occur?
In liquids and gases
Why is diffusion important?
It is how substances move in and out of cells
Example of diffusion
- perfume
- squash
- salt water
What happens as the temperature increases?
The faster diffusion happens, more kinetic energy.
What affects diffusion? Give an example:
The type of substance, substances diffuse quicker in gas than liquids, because the particles are more spread apart.
What happens to animal cells when placed in pure water?
Animal cells burst (lysis).
-The water pushes
the cytoplasm and breaks the cell membrane
What happens to plant cells when placed in water?
Plant cells expand, becomes turgid
-the cell wall protects the cytoplasm and cell membrane from bursting
