Transport Containers - Cargo Tanks Flashcards
This type of Cargo Tank:
- has a pressure range No Greater Than 80 psi.
- Known as “hopper trailers”
- has V-shaped bins
- is PNEUMATICALLY unloaded
- hazard classes 5.1 and 9.
- used to transport fertilizers, oxidizers, grains, food products, plastic products, and may include toxic materials.
- max capacity of 1500 cu. ft.
Dry Bulk Cargo Tanks
This type of Cargo Tank:
- has a Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) greater than 3 psi and no more than 5 psi (between 3 and 5 psi).
- hazard class 3
- used to transport fuel oil, gasoline, alcohol, flammable/combustible liquids
- has large oval ends/elliptical cross-sections
- rollover/spill rail the entire length of the tank
- may contain any liquid, such as liquid food products.
- capacity of up to 10,000 gallons
Non-Pressure Liquid Cargo Tanks
06 series: TC 406/DOT 406/SCT-306 (MC 306, TC 306)
This type of Cargo Tank:
- has an INTERNAL VAPOR PRESSURE of 18 psi AT 100°F (low pressure is considered to be less than 40 psi 170°F)
- hazard classes 3 and 8
- used to transport flammable/combustible liquids and MILD CORROSIVES
- round/cylindrical or HORSHOE shape
- single work platform, and tank cross-section is circular.
Note: a cross-section is a surface or shape that is or would be exposed by making a straight cut through something.
Low-Pressure Chemical Tanks
07 Series: TC 407/DOT 407/SCT-307 (MC 307, TC 307)
This type of Cargo Tank:
- has a pressure range from 35 to 50 psi
- hazard class 8
- used to transport high-density liquids and STRONG CORROSIVES
- small round or horseshoe ends
- access housing is often coated with a BLACK TAR-LIKE material to protect the surface from the contents
- single work platform in the BACK
- reinforcement ribs
- capacity between 5,000 to 6,000 (maximum) gallons
Corrosive Liquid Cargo Tanks
12 series: TC 412/DOT 412/SCT-312 (MC 312, TC 312)
This type of Cargo Tank:
- has a pressure range of 100 to 500 psi
- hazard class 2
- used to transport liquefied compressed gases, such as propane.
- hemispherical or ellipsoidal ends or head.
- capacity of 2,500 to 11,500 gallons
High-Pressure Cargo Tanks
31 series: MC 331/TC 331/SCT-331
This type of Cargo Tank:
- has a pressure range from 3,000 to 5,000 psi
- hazard class 2
- used to transport bulk non-liquefied compressed gasses
- seamless steel cylinders 9 to 48 inches in diameter; multiple cylinders are stacked and manifolded together, permanently mounted on a trailer.
- all cylinders contain the same material, independently piped.
- fill and discharge of products are done through a manifold header, usually located at the rear of the trailer.
Compressed Gas Tube Trailers
This type of Cargo Tank:
- designed for 23.5 psi but no more than 500 psi
- tank within a tank (double-shelled)
- tank = inner vessel
- jacket = outer shell (insulation)
- ends are dished
- product is a gas that is cooled to at least -130°F until it becomes liquid
- control valves are located in a compartment on the back or the side, just forward the trailer wheels.
- capacity of 5,000 to 14,000 gallons
Cryogenic Liquid Cargo Tanks
38 series: MC 338/TC 338/SCT 338 (TC341, CGA341)
This container is used to transport fuel oil, gasoline, flammable/combustible materials.
406
non-pressure liquid cargo tank
This container is used to transport poisons and mild corrosives.
407
low-pressure chemical tank
This container is used to transport liquefied gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen, and argon.
338
cryogenic liquid cargo tank
This container is used to transport liquefied-AND-compressed gases such as propane.
331
