Transport Across Cell Membranes Flashcards
What is passive transport?
A substance which does not require additional energy. It is the movement from a high to low concentration
What is a cell membrane composed of?
Proteins and lipids.
Give an example of passive transport
Diffusion and osmosis
Name 3 examples that enter a cell by diffusion
Glucose, amino acid
What is the difference between Osmosis and Diffusion?
Osmosis is the movement of water to high to low and diffusion is the movement of a substance.
What is the term Plasmolysed mean?
When a vacuole has shrunk due to water gain.
What is active transport?
The movement of molecules from a low to high concentration. It requires extra energy (ATP)
What is a selectively permeable membrane?
Referring to the membrane that controls the movement of molecules.
What is active transport?
Transport of molecules to the same concentration.
What does the term turgid mean?
Swollen PLANT CELL with a cell vacuole.
What happens when an animal cell is placed in high water concentration
Swell up and burst
What happens when an animal cell is placed in lower water concentration?
The shrink due to water loss (osmosis)
Name 3 substances that leave a cell by diffusion?
Carbon dioxide and urea
What happens to a plant cell placed in high water concentration?
Swells up and becomes turgid. It doesn’t burst due to the cell wall strength
What happens when a plant cell is placed in Lower water concentration?
Loose water by osmosis and become Plasmolysed
