Transport Flashcards
What does the xylem carry
Water and mineral salts from the roots up the shoot to the leaves in the transpiration stream
The main systems for plant transport are?
- xylem
2. phloem
What does the phloem transport
Sugars like sucrose and amino acids from the leaves (where they are produced) to the other parts of the plant
What is the movement of food round the plant?
Translocation
This happens in phloem tubes
What do root hairs do
- take in water
- they are long hairs along root branches that stick into soil
- each root branch has millions of microscopic hairs
- gives the plant a big surface area for absorbing water
Why don’t unicellular organisms need transport systems
Because substances can diffuse directly into and out of the cell cross the membrane
Why do multicellular organisms need transport systems
Because direct diffusion from the outer surface would be too slow
(As substances would have to travel long distances)
Multicellular organisms need
Transport systems
What causes transportation
The evaporation and diffusion of water from a plants surface
How is water taken into the root cells
OSMOSIS
Higher water concentration in the soil so water is drawn into the root by osmosis
