Transport Flashcards
what is diffusion
net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration - becoming equally dispersed
how is diffusion good
it is a passive process, not requiring energy because it moves down concentration gradient
what affects diffusion
temperature - heat energy is transferred to kinetic energy which means particles move faster from high to low
surface area - increase in surface area means more space for diffusion of particles
a steep concentration gradient - big difference of particles mean that rate movement is faster
what happens to surface area as size increases
the ratio of surface area to volume decreases
what is osmosis
the movement of water molecules from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution through a selectively permeable membrane
what happens to plant cells in a hypertonic solution
water moves out which results in volume of vacuole decreasing and the cell membrane being pulled from the cell wall - PLASMOLYSIS
wilting of plant
what happens when a plant is in hypotonic solution
water moves in therefore increasing volume of vacuole and plant becomes turgid stand up right
what is active transport
a substance needs to be moved from an area of low concentration to high concentration
requires energy from cell
