Transpiration Flashcards
What conditions increase the rate of evaporation of a leaf.
Anything that increase the rate of photosynthesis will increase the rate of transpiration. This happens because more stomata are open to let CO2 in, so more water is lost through the stomata by evaporation.
So warm, sunny conditions increase the rate of transpiration.
Conditions that increase the rate of evaporation of water when the stomata are open will also increase transpiration. Hot, Dry, Windy conditions increase the rate of transpiration.
What is the process of transpiration stream
Water moves into the roots via osmosis
Water moves through the xylem from the roots into the leaves
What is the phloem made of, transport ect
The phloem is made of columns of living cells with small holes in the ends to allow substances to flow through.
They transport food substances, mainly dissolved sugars made in the leaves to growing regions. Eg new shoots and storage organs, eg root tubers of the plant.
The transport goes in both directions.
What is the function of the xylem what’s it made out of ect.
Made of dead cells joined end to end with no end walls between them and the hole down the middle.
They carry water and minerals from the roots to the stem and leaves in the transpiration stream.
What is the transpiration stream
As water evaporates from the surface of the leaves, more water is pulled up through the xylem to take its place. This constant movement of water molecules through the xylem from the roots to the leaves is known as transpiration stream. It is driven by the evaporation of water from the leaves.
So anything that effects the rate of evaporation will effect transpiration.
