Transpiration Flashcards
Define the term Potometer
A device that measures the rate at which a plant respires.
Provide a description of the process of transpiration.
Transpiration is the process whereby water vapour is lost from the via via the stomata. Environmental conditions that increase or reduce the rate of diffusion influence the rate of transpiration.
Name the vessels that transport water and dissolved minerals in a plant.
Xylem vessels.
Name the type of cell that can be described as a modified epidermal cell that increases the surface area of roots.
Root hair.
Describe the movement of water through roots.
Movement of water through roots is driven by both osmosis and diffusion. Water enters the root hair from the soil via osmosis. There are two processes by which this water can reach a xylem vessel i. along the cell walls of the parenchyma tissue. ii. by osmosis through the cytoplasm of the cortex cells.
