Transmission Methods and Modes Flashcards
Three basic communication channels
- Simplex
- Half Duplex
- Full Duplex
Describe analog signalling
Signal that varies in amplitude, frequency and/or phase in response to changes in sound, light, heat etc
Describe digital signalling
Represents 1 or 0
less interference when used over long distance
Parallel Mode is used to?
connect 2 pieces of equipment a few metres apart
Serial Mode is used to?
transfer digital data in a serial fashion 1 bit after another
What is Serial-In-Parallel-Out
character loaded serially and then shifted out in parallel
What is Parallel-In-Serial-Out
character loaded parallel then shifted out serially
What does UART stand for
Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter
What is UART
a microchip that controls a computers interface to its attached serial device
What does that UART also do (2 things)
- converts bytes it receives (Parallel) into a single serial bit stream for outbound transmission
- Inbound transmission converts serial bit stream into bytes for computer
Describe Synchronous Transmission
continuous and consistent timed transfer of data blocks
Describe Asynchronous Transmission
data encoded with start and stop bits
