Translocation Flashcards
what is translocation?
the transport of organic compounds in the phloem from source to sink.
is translocation an active process?
yes
what are assimilates?
the products of photosynthesis that are transported.
what is the main assimilate transported around the plant?
sucrose.
what are the main sources of assimilates?
- green leaves and green stems.
- storage organs
- food stores in seeds when they germinate.
what are the main sinks of assimilates?
- growing roots
- meristems that are dividing
- parts of the plant laying down food stores (developing seeds, fruits, storage organs.)
what are the main steps of translocation?
- phloem loading
- phloem unloading
what are the two main ways of phloem loading for transport?
- symplast route
- apoplast route
how do assimilates move through the symplast route?
moves through the cytoplasm of the mesophyll cellsand into the sieve tubes by diffusion through plasmodesmata .
how do assimilates move through the apoplast route?
moves through the cell walls and inter-cell spaces to the companion cells and sieve elements. by diffusion along concentration gradient.
