Translational Motion Flashcards
What is speed/velocity at max. height of parabola?
Speed is minimum but not zero because of x-component of speed which stays constant. Applies for velocity too.
An object’s flight time depends only on x or y component of motion?
Y-component of motion only
Kinematic equation w/out final velocity
y = y(0) + v(0)t + (1/2)at^2
x = x(0) + v(0)t + (1/2)at^2
Kinematic equation w/out displacement
v = v(0) + at
Kinematic equation w/out time
v^2 = v(0)^2 + 2a[y - y(0)]
v^2 = v(0)^2 + 2a[x - x(0)]
Kinematic equation w/out acceleration
y - y(0) = (1/2) [v + v(0)] t
x - x(0) = (1/2) [v + v(0)] t
What happens to the range (x-displacement) an object covers when mass is changed in simple projectile motion?
Nothing, mass does not affect on range because gravity affects all objects regardless of mass
Range = [v(0)^2 * 2h] / g
When comparing A in terms of B, do ratios correctly
A / B = #(A) / #(B)
Multiple B over to get how many times more or less A is compared to B
____________________________________________
NOT!!!
A * #(A) = B * #(B)
And divide #(A) to get A compared to B
What direction is firing object from shore to sea?
Offshore direction
What direction is firing object from sea to shore?
Onshore direction
Is there more or less air resistance on a hot day?
Less because air less dense on hot day
If there is transfer of momentum and kinetic energy, does mass matter? (Ex. Slingshot)
Yes, this is not simple projectile motion, heavier object will have lower initial velocity
Is shooting at 45 degree angle always going to give largest range?
Not always, only if starting and ending points are the same height
In circular motion, is velocity zero, constant, or changing? And is there acceleration?
Velocity is always changing because direction of object is changing, therefore there is acceleration too. Speed can be constant though because no direction included.
Wind resistance increases or decreases acceleration?
Decreases because wind resistance opposes direction of motion
Ex. When object falling, wind resistance it is upward force that reduces overall downward force of gravity
Ex. When object thrown up, wind resistance is downward force so would increase acceleration
Therefore the time of flight with or without wind resistance would be the same if object follows parabolic motion
Wind resistance also affects horizontal direction of motion
