Transition to barefoot running Flashcards
1
Q
What does removing rigid shoe and cushioning do?
A
Removes initial shock absorption by shoe, therefore absorption of impact forces down to musculoskeletal system.
2
Q
How does runner adapt?
A
Initial heel strike impact force is high - runner unadapted to this style - with impact being transferred from heel bone through ankle up to lower back.
Sensorimotor system will realise damaging effects of high impact forces.
Individual adapts to mid foot/forefoot landing automatically, and impact force associated with heel disappears.
3
Q
How is barefoot running used in a training programme?
A
Loads joints differently and different muscle activated.
