Transition Metals Flashcards
Transition Metal
A metal that can form one or more stable ions with a partially filled d-sub shell
Describe electronic configuration of chromium
Prefers to have one electron in each orbital of the 3d sub level and just one in the 4s sub level- gives it more stability
Describe electronic configuration of copper
Prefers to have a full 3d sub level and just one electron in the 4s sub level- it’s more stable
Explain why scandium isn’t a transition metal?
Forms Sc 3+ ions.
These have empty d sub levels
Explain why zinc isn’t a transition metal?
Forms Zn 2+ ions.
These have full d sub levels
Transition Metals and the Formation of their Ions
Describe
Form positive ions.
S electrons are removed first, then the d electrons
Three Similar Physical Properties of Transition Metals
- They all have a high density
- They all have high melting and boiling points
- Their ionic radii are more or less the same
Four Special Chemical Properties of Transition Metals
- They can form complex ions
- They form coloured ions
- They’re good catalysts
- They can exist in variable oxidation states
