Transition Metals Flashcards
which part of the periodic table are the transition metals in?
They are between groups 2 and 3
Why are transition metals able to conduct electricity?
They are able to conduct electricity because the atoms are metallically bonded meaning there are delocalised electrons that are able to carry the charge
What are common properties in transition metals
They have high melting points and densities. They are also strong, hard, and malleable
Do Transition Metals react with water?
Most transition Metals do react with water but the reaction is very slow.
Do transition metals react with oxygen?
A lot of transition metals react with oxygen when heated. If they are not heated some metals will react with oxygen quite slowly, however some may not reacts at all.
How can transition metals be used in Chemistry?
Transition metals can be used as Catalysts to control a reaction. For Example Iron is a catalyst in the Haber Process ammonia.
