Transition Metals Flashcards
Where are transition metals found in the periodic table?
In the centre
How do transition metals behave?
Like regular metals
Name two things that transition metals can conduct.
Electricity and heat
In comparison to metals in group 1-3, how reactive are the transition metals?
Less reactive
Name three properties of the transition metals.
- malleable
- strong
- shiny
What type of melting point do transition metals have?
High
What type of density do transition metals have?
High
What can transition be used as?
Catalysts -
nickel in hydrogenation
iron in the haber process
potassium iodide / manganese IV oxide in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
Name two facts about the ions of transition metals.
- they have more than one ion (e.g. Fe2+, Fe3+)
- different ions form different coloured compounds: Fe2+ is red, Fe3+ is green. This is based on the metal they contain.
