Transition Metals Flashcards
Explain what happens when transition metals loses its electrons.
Transition metals loses its electrons to form a positive ion. It loses 4s sub shell first before 3d to form a stable oxidisation state
What do complex ions exist of?
complex ions consists of a central metal ion surrounded by ligands
Explain what a ligand is.
molecule or ion that donates a pair of electrons to central transition metal ion to form a dative covalent bond
what is Transition metals used as in the industry
Transition metals are industrial catalysts
How are Platinum and Rhodium used in catalytic converters in cars? and how is this useful?
It converts carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide into carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas. Its useful because its not pollutant
What is the role of iron in the Haber process?
used as a catalyst
Explain what happens in the Haber process when using iron. Include how ammonia is produced
Nitrogen reacts with hydrogen to make ammonia. The iron catalyst speeds up the reaction by lowering the activation energy so N2 and H2 bonds are broken more easily
Iron is used as a catalyst in the Haber process. How can this will with financial and environmental issues.
Cost of process are reduced.
Less fuel is needed to be burned and generate energy, this means that fossil fuels are conserved and less carbon emissions are produced
What is the Haber process used for?
Haber process produces ammonia and this helps with making fertilisers to improve crop field
