Transition metal Complex: Flashcards
1
Q
outline the method for the preparation of a transition metal complex: (6) e.g. copper
A
- calculate mass of copper sulphate. dissolve in water.
- add conc. ammonia in a fume cupboard.
- stir and pour into ethanol. then cool in ice bath. crystals form.
- filter using a Buchner funnel - collecting crystals in the funnel.
- was tube with cold ethanal and add the washings.
- remove crystals and pat dry between two filter papers. record the mass of the dry crystals.
2
Q
what is hydrated copper sulphate harmful to?
A
aquatic life.
3
Q
why might mass be lower than expected?
A
reaction not going to completion - product staying in solution and not crystallising out.
4
Q
why might mass be higher than expected?
A
not dry enough crystals:
- water/ethanol adding to the final mass.
5
Q
why is [FeF6]3- colourless?
A
- strong interactions between F- ligands.
- d-d energy gap is large.
- so frequency absorbed is not in the visible region.
