Transition metal Complex: Flashcards

1
Q

outline the method for the preparation of a transition metal complex: (6) e.g. copper

A
  1. calculate mass of copper sulphate. dissolve in water.
  2. add conc. ammonia in a fume cupboard.
  3. stir and pour into ethanol. then cool in ice bath. crystals form.
  4. filter using a Buchner funnel - collecting crystals in the funnel.
  5. was tube with cold ethanal and add the washings.
  6. remove crystals and pat dry between two filter papers. record the mass of the dry crystals.

Q

why is [FeF6]3- colourless?

A
  • strong interactions between F- ligands.
  • d-d energy gap is large.
  • so frequency absorbed is not in the visible region.
  • U.V.
