Transition metal Flashcards
Define transition metal
A dblock element that can form from one stable ion with an incomplete d subshell
What are the properties?
Good conductors, denser than other metals, high MP/BP, ability to change oxidation stars, catalysys, coloured ions
What are the execptions?
Chromium - 3d5
Copper - 3d10
Which aren’t transition metals?
Zn and Sc - stable ions have empty or complete d-sub shells
Define complex ion
Metal ion co-ordinately bonded to one or more ligands
Define ligand
Molecules that donate a pair of electron to a metal atom or ion to form a co-ordinate bond
Define co-ordinate number
Total number of bonds
Define bidentate ligand
Ligand donating 2 lone pairs of electron to metal ion
What are the shapes?
Tetra,octa and square planar
Haemoglobin
Contains Fe”+ with form 6bonds. 4 pairs come for nitrogen (haem), fifth nitrogen on protein and one water
water subbed for water
If CO is present, swaps water for CO (doesn’t rapidly swap) so no oxygen can bind
