Transition elements Flashcards
Transition element definition
And block element that forms one or more stable ions with an incomplete d subshell
Electronic configuration of scandium with [Ar]
3d1 4s2
Electronic configuration of Zinc with [Ar]
3d10 4s2
Chromium configuration
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6
Copper
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s1
Features of transition elements
- Variable oxidation states
- Colorful compounds
- Used as catalysts
- Complex ions/compounds
Why do they have variable oxidation states
- similarity in the energy of the 3d & 4s atomic orbitals
Why does an element have a have a - as maximum oxidation state?
It involves all of the 4s and 3d electrons in the atom
Why aren’t zinc and scandium transition element
Scandium has no electron fully satisfy the definition of transition elements
Zinc has a a completely full 3d subshell
Stability constant definition
The equilibrium constant for the formation of a complex ions in a solvent from its constituent ions or molecules
Ligand
A molecule or ion with one or more lone pairs of electrons which form dative covalent bonds to central transition element atom or ion.
Complex ion
A central transition metal ion surrounded by ligands, bonded to the central ion by dative covalent bonds.
Coordination number
No. of dative bonds formed by a ligand with a transition metal ion in a complex.
