What is a risk factor?
A
C-section
Commonest cause of respiratory distress in term infants (more common in C-section deliveries)

What are the signs and symptoms?
A
- Increased FiO2 requirement
- Tachypnoea
- Grunting, flaring
- Retractions
- Good bilateral air entry
- Cyanosis if severe
happens shortly after birth (around 3 days)

Q
What investigations would you carry out?
A
CXR 🡪 fluid in horizontal fissure, perihilar markings, good lung volume
ABG 🡪 mild hypoxia with normal or raised pCO2
Diagnosis made after ruling out other causes

Q
What is the management?
A
Start antibiotics until infection rules out (cannot differentiate between sepsis)
Additional oxygen
ABG
CPAP
NG tube as rapid respiratory rate can cause aspiration
Reassure 🡪 self-limiting, no risk of chronic/ respiratory problem. Resolves usually by day 1-3
