- RBC - main role is oxygen transportation - marked with antigens
- WCC - immune function
- Platelets - clotting and tissue repair
- Plasma - suspends the cells and platelets, carries nutrients, electrolytes plasma proteins, hormones provide 55% blood volume. carries antibodies (opposite to antigens on RBCs)

- packed cells
- indication - anemia, acute blood loss due to trauma, surgery, post-partum. blood disorders, cancer
- Plasma: product
- frozen plasma - hypovolameia
- cryoprecipitate - haemophilia A, warfarin reversal
- albumin - hypovolaemia
- immunoglobin - acquired passive immunity, immunodeficiencies, immunomodulation in chronic inflammation

- being incorrectly types or cross-marked
- having a transfusion reaction
