Transformations on the Coordinate Plane Flashcards
What is a transformation?
Is the movement of a geometric figure.
Is the position of the figure before the transformation.

Is the position of the figure after the transformation.

Is the resulting or modified figure.
What are the tranformation of figure on the coordinate plane?
-Reflection (or flip)
-Translation (or slide)
-Dilatation (or increase or decrease)
-Rotation (or turn)
Reflection
A figure flipped over a line.
Translation
A figure slide in any direction.
Dilatation
A figure enlarged or reduce.
Rotation
A figure turned around a point.
To reflect a point over the x-axis,
multiply the y-axis by -1. (x, -y)
To reflect a point over the y-axis
multiply the x-axis by -1. (-x, y)
To translate by an ordered pair (a,b), add a to the x-coordinate, and b to the y-coordinate
( x + a, y + b )
To dilate a figure by a scale factor k, multiply both coordinates by k.
(xk, yk)
To rotate a figure 90° counterclockwise about the origin,
switch the coordinates and multiply the new first coordinate by -1.
