Transformations Flashcards
Describe the transformation done for y=f(-x)
x -> -x
Reflection in the y-axis
(-x,y)
Describe the transformation done for y= -f(x)
y -> -y
Reflection in the x-axis
(x,-y)
Describe the transformation done for y= af(x)
y -> (1/a)y
scaling parallel to the y-axis by factor of a
(x, ay)
when y is replaced with 1/a y, describe the transformation
scaling // to the y axis by factor of a
when x is replaced with ax, describe the transformation
scaling // to the x axis by a factor of (1/a)x
How do you remember which is 1/a and not for scaling??
When u replace right it’s like
ay = f(x) OR y = f(ax)
right so the FACTOR is always
= 1/a YEAHH
and the parallel to AXIS is the SAME as the replaced y/x
Describe the transformation done for y= f(ax)
x -> ax
Scaling parallel to the x axis by factor of 1/a
(1/a x, y)
Describe the transformation done for y= f (x) + a
Translation by a units in the positive y-direction
Describe the transformation done for y= f (x) - a
Translation by a units in the negative y direction
When is the axis swapped for describing the transformation ?(out of translation, scaling, reflection)
Reflection (when replacing with -y, reflection is in the x axis)
How do you remember which is positive or negative and not for translation ??
Aight so the direction (-ve/+ve) in the description is always OPPOSITE to the DIRECTION YOU REPLACE IT WITH
y -> y - a = in positive y direction
x -> x + a = in negative x direction
Describe the transformation done for y= f (x - a)
Translation by a units in the positive x direction
(x + a, y)
Describe the transformation done for y= f (x + a)
translation by a units in the negative x direction
(x-a, y)
