Positive Transfer example
Throwing transfers positively to a raquet action of a tennis serve
Negative Transfer
When one skill hinders the learning and performance of another skill
Negative Transfer example
A loose wrist action of a badminton shot tranfers negatively to a firm wrist action needed for a tennis shot
Proactive Transfer
When a previously learnt skill influences a skill that is currently being learnt
Proactive Transfer example
A throwing motor programme learned as a child will later transfer proactively to an overarm volleyball serve
Retroactive Transfer
When a newly learnt skill influences a previously learnt skill
Retroactive Transfer example
A successful tennis serve may influence the previously learned overarm throw in cricket

A footballer can shoot with matching power and accuracy using both right and left foot
Optimising Positive Transfer
Make practice more game realistic
Explain similiar movements/skills
Teach similar movements/skills together
Make sure previous skill is learnt well before moving on
Positive praise when postive transfer occurs
Point out similar tactics
Teach fundamental skills first will transfer positively across different sports
Use progressive practices so that sub routines can build upon other skills
Limiting Negative Transfer
Ensure performer understands the differences between skills required
Ensure skills are thoroughly learnt before moving on
Avoid teaching skills together that might cause confusion
Make practices game related
