Transfers of carbon Flashcards
What does a tree act like and how much % of wood is carbon?
carbon store
50%
How is carbon dioxide transferred to soil?
root cell respiration/death and decomposition
How is carbon released into the atmosphere?
respiration of decomposers and plants
Why are trees carbon sinks
they absorb more then they release
What is the lithosphere succession
various stages of vegetation development
idk if this is needed lithosphere carbon rock formation:
When rock is exposed for the first time (glacier retreat), it is vulnerable to weathering. As the rock is broken down carbon can be released, often dissolved in water. Vegetation will begin to grow on the bare rock like lichen and mosses.
At this stage the carbon exchange starts (photosynthesis and respiration). As more organic matter is added to fragments of broken rock a soil (pedosphere) develops that can support a wider range of species of plants.
what is a sere
a serial stage
each stage of that succession
what is the 4 sere
hydrosere
lithosere
halosere
psammorsere (sand)
What is a climatic climax?
When areas can support complicated species such as oak
what does climatic climax cause?
equilibrium
Name one climatic climax in the uk:
Deciduous woodland
Role of animal in carbon cycle?
Inc carbon in atmosphere through respiration
When they die it inc carbon in soil organic matter for decomposition
What is the pioneer species that occurs in lithosere succession?
mosses/lichen
