Transferring Energy Flashcards
What is meant by the conservation of energy?
- Energy can be stored, transferred between stores, and dissipated - but never be created or destroyed.
- The total energy of a closed system has no net change.
What is a system?
A collection of objects.
What is a closed system?
A system (collection of objects) that can be treated completely on its own and where there is no net change in the system’s total energy.
What are the 4 main main ways energy can be transferred between stores?
- Mechanically
- Electrically
- By heating
- By radiation
What is meant by the transfer of energy mechanically?
A force acting on an object (and doing work) e.g. pushing, stretching, squashing.
What is meant by the transfer of energy electrically?
A charge doing work e.g. charges moving round a circuit.
What is meant by the transfer of energy by heating?
Energy transferred from a hotter object to a colder object e.g. heating a pan on a hob.
What is meant by the transfer of energy by radiation?
Energy transferred by waves, e.g. energy from the Sun reaching Earth by light.
