Transfer of learning
The application of previous experience to present learning. The effect on the performance of practising one skill or learning another.
Positive transfer
Previously learned skill has beneficial effect upon another
EXAMPLE: throw ball - identical to - overhead clear action in badminton
Negative transfer
Occurs when the learning of one skill inhibits the learning of an additional skill.
EXAMPLE: tennis serve and badminton serve.
Bilateral transfer
Is the transfer of skills from one side of the body to the opposite side.
EXAMPLE: learning how to kick left footed and then transferring it to the right foot.
Zero transfer
Occurs when there are no similarities between the tasks and therefore no effect on either skill.
EXAMPLE: football free kick and a golf swing.
