Transfer Of Energy Flashcards
Producers
Green plants absorb light energy using chlorophyll (green pigment found in cells of plants). They use it to react to carbon dioxide with water to make simple sugars such as glucose which provide food and energy for plants to grow.
Consumers
Animals and non-green plants, including fungi, cannot produce their own food from solar energy, and are known heterotrophs.
They are consumers as they must consume/eat plants or other animals in order to stay alive and grow. These are the three main categories:
Herbivores
Carnivores
Omnivores
Energy flow in eco systems
Oak tree - leaf eating insect - shrew - fox
detritivores - organisms such as wood lice and earthworms, which feed directly on material
decomposers - microorganisms, including bacteria fungi, which chemically break down waste materials and dead organisms using enzymes.
