Transects and Quadrats Flashcards
1
Q
What are Transects and Quadrats used for?
A
- Used to survery immobile or slowing moving species e.g plants
1
Q
What is systematic sampling?
A
- records how distribution if plant species changes a in a line.
e.g. away from a high tide line.
2
Q
What is a line Transect?
A
- Runs a tape measure between two points
- Records all the species that touch the tape
3
Q
What is a belt transect?
A
- uses a quadrats along the length of the Transect
4
Q
What is an Interrupted Transect?
A
- Uses quadrats at fixed intervals along the Transect.
5
Q
What is a Frame Quadrat?
A
- square frames divided into 100 sections
6
Q
what is random sampling used for?
A
- To record the abundance of plant species
- record the number of indviduals of each species in the quadrat
7
Q
what is species frequency?
A
- how often a species is found in each square
8
Q
what is the percentage cover?
A
- If a square is more than 50% covered within a species
- fast - don’t have to count total number of individuals
9
Q
what is a point quadrat?
A
- frame with holes in it
- random sampling - placed randomly
- drop poles through holes - record all plants touching poles
- calculate percentage cover
10
Q
How do you calculate percentage cover?
A
number of poles touching species / total number of poles
11
Q
What are the type of Transects?
A
- line
- belt
- interrupted
12
Q
What are the type of Quadrats?
A
- Frame
- Point
