transcription Flashcards
what is transcriptome and its purpose
transcriptome is entire set of RNA
- by transcribing entire RNA sequence, can discover where and when each gene is swtiched on /off
- can determine activity of each gene in certain cell/ tissue type
- eg: transcriptome database can show us if gene is in higher in cancer cell compared to normal healthy cell= can conclude this gene has a fucntion in cancer
- eg: if unknown gene expressed in fat tissue buut not bone/muscle cell = this gene may have function in fat stoarage/ metabolsim.
what do promoters share
in diff parts of the genome , promoters can share same regulatory DNA sequence = allows SAME transcription factors to bind
what is transcriptomics
refers the the complete collection of gene transcripts in a cell/ tissue at a given time
used to:
1) identify genes, proteins , metabolites that are altered in pre-disease state & might act as molecular biomarkers
2) to determine when/where each gene is turned on or off
3) to identify pathways regulate in a specific metabolic set up (eg; response to a drug)
4) to characterise pathological status, eg: transcriptome database shows unknown gene’s expresion levels are dramatically higher in cancer cells than healthy cells (unknwon gene may play a role in cell graoth)
