Transcription Flashcards
What is transcription catalyzed by?
RNA polymerase
What are the precursor ribonucleotides?
ATP, GTP, CTP and UTP
What is the site of initiation called?
Initiation site
What is the region called where the gene starts?
Promoter
What is the RNA polymerase and its co-factors often referred to when assembled on the DNA template?
Transcription complex
Which direction does the RNA chain grow in?
5’ to 3’ direction
What direction does the RNA polymerase move in on the DNA template strand?
3’ to 5’
What does the RNA polymerase do to the DNA as it moves along it?
The RNA polymerase locally unwinds the DNA and separates the strands to expose the template strand for ribonucleotide base pairing and covalent addition to the 3’ end of the growing RNA chain.
What is the region called at the end of RNA synthesis?
The Control region or the terminator sequence
What do the end sequences often contain?
Self-complementary sequences that can form stem-loop or hairpin secondary structure in the RNA product. These cause the polymerase to pause and cease transcription.
